Gone fishing...

What can I say? I'm in thrall to Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band. It's a completely overused word, but Mr Beefheart is an authentic American genius (the overused word being, well, guess). I just cannot stop listening to this album (and Doc at the Radar Station). Magnificent.

Hey pinhut,

Looks like we like a lot of the same taste in music. Had I any musical talent, I would name my "band" "Rocket Morton." (Laugh at me if somebody beat me to the punch)

Have you read Clinton Heylin's FROM THE VELVETS TO THE VOIDOIDS?

Also, since you seem to have a lot of interesting opinions about modern fiction, what do you think of Jonathan Safran Foer?

i have zero opinion on Safran Foer, as i have no compulsion to read any novel featuring shtetls. i believe this to be a fundamental right. let me rewind from that statement to say that i don't really think, on reflection, that i do have many interesting opinions on modern fiction, having mostly confined myself to reading the work of the dead (for various reasons). this year's highlights have been The Big Con, some of the H L Mencken journalism, John Fante once again, Knut Hamsun, and Boris Vian and Jim Thompson. All dead, all great.

The only living writer I have read with any passion in the last five years is James Ellroy and he lost it after American Tabloid.

my band would be The Bedwetters.

i haven't read that book you reference. i do dig the voidoids, though, great stuff. it's kind of weird that richard hell and john mcenroe are linked by marriages to patty smyth.

lipstick traces by Greil Marcus is also very good, and i received that for my birthday this year.
